In this centenary year of Puccini's death, we perform his youthful Messa di Gloria, written as his graduation exercise in 1880. Already operatic in its joyful energy and melodious lyricism, the work clearly points towards Puccini's future success. In contrast, Verdi's contemporaneous Quattro Pezzi Sacri (Four Sacred Pieces) date from late in his life, when he returned reflectively to his roots as a church musician. Yet here too operatic drama is never far away with intense contrasts of mood, vocal texture and instrumental colour.
We are delighted that Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra will once again be accompanying us in these delightful and inspiring works.
Join us for this uplifting summer concert given in beautiful Christ Church, St Leonards.
